Go east

A recent study by Swiss bank UBS ranked Oslo, London, Zurich and Copenhagen as the most expensive places to live in the world, so you’d be forgiven for looking to buy a trendy urban pad somewhere else. London and New York residents pay the most in terms of housing costs, but they’re compensated by high wages – both cities rank in the top six for this category, behind Copenhagen, Oslo, Zurich and Geneva. Of course, the purchasing power of people living in Scandinavia and Switzerland is adversely affected by high taxes, social security payments and production costs.

If it’s a decent mix of reasonable prices, low living costs and investment potential you’re after, the Czech Republic and Hungary should be on your list. In particular, the £75,000 riverside properties in Prague (pictured), or on Budapest’s Gellert Hill, offer a wide range of first-class choices.

The leading cave-house developer and agent in Andalucia, Spanish Inland Properties, has launched a free, downloadable, on-line guide to buying a cave house, with detailed information about the purchase and restoration processes.

Spanish Inland Properties currently has a stock of around 180 cave houses for sale – either for redevelopment, or as a finished, fully refurbished home. Prices range from €23,000 to €950,000. www.cave-houses.com

Greek hotspot

According to property expert RealMæglerne, the Greek town of Litochoro, around 90km from Thessalonica, is proving popular with Danes looking for a reasonably priced place in the sun. The small, 8,000-population town sits at the foot of Mount Olympus, the country’s highest mountain at 400m above sea level.

Litichoro is close to the Mediterranean sea and its climate is both warm and dry. In summer, trekking and mountain climbing are popular pursuits and the beach is just five minutes away. During the winter there’s skiing on Mount Olympus.

All of which should make for a variety of decent buy-to-let opportunities. Property prices in Litochoro start at around €80,000 for an apartment with two rooms (one bedroom and one living room). House prices begin at around €200,000 for 100m2. www.realm.aeliglerne.dk
