On the whole, flying is a very safe form of transport, and most passengers can tolerate the factors to which the body is exposed during a flight.

However, sitting still for a fairly long period of time without moving your legs can increase the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or blood clots in the legs. For most passengers this risk is very slight, but with the safety of all our passengers in mind, Sterling’s medical department has compiled the following guidelines to make your journey a comfortable one:
1. Be well-prepared for your trip, arrive in good time and avoid stress.
2. Drink plenty of water before and during the flight.
3. Avoid an excessive intake of coffee, tea or alcohol before and during the flight, as these have a diuretic effect.
4. Keep moving your feet and legs frequently during the flight to stimulate the circulation.
5. Change your sitting position frequently so that the seat pressure is not always at the same place on the underside of your thighs. This ensures that the blood from the legs can run straight back to the heart.
6. Wearing support hose during the flight is recommended for everyone. Pregnant women, women taking the contraceptive pill, and passengers suffering from cardiovascular conditions and certain blood disorders will really benefit.
7. A junior aspirin (100-125 mg acetyl salicylic acid) is recommended on the day you travel, if you can tolerate it and are not suffering from any otherillness which excludes the use of aspirin.
8. If you take medication, it is recommended that you carry it with you in your hand luggage.
9. If you have any doubts or concerns, consult your own doctor before the flight.
We hope that you enjoy your flight.
