words by Eva Johansson

China company Wedgwood had something of an old fashioned image until Jasper Conran came to the rescue with platinum stripes and bold, ultra-modern colours. His collections are charming, practical and eye-catching, but still subtle enough to fit alongside the other items in your home, whether they’re new or vintage. “In everything I do, I try to balance aspects of traditional English heritage with a modern sensibility,” says the British fashion designer. “It’s about updating an established brand without losing its essential signature. I always try to design pieces that I would want to use myself or have in my house. My aim has been to create pieces that move easily between everyday use and special occasions.” www.wedgwood.com

John Rocha +Waterford

Waterford, the classic crystalware company, has been bringing its designs into the 21st century with the help of Irish designer John Rocha. Gorgeous flutes in black tap into the current trend for decadence and luxury, while Rocha’s latest collections Lume and Voya include vases, bowls and glasses in light, modern shapes, using a finer crystal than before. The designs are all elegant, sparkling and feminine – just like the womenswear that Rocha is famous for. “Both these ranges are further steps in the exciting journey we began in 1995,” says Rocha. “I chose the name Voya as a reflection of this journey.” www.waterford.com

Efva Attling + Orrefors

Stockholm-based jewellery designer Efva Attling’s creations have been worn by Jennifer Aniston and Madonna. Her first foray into homeware, for Orrefors, has resulted in a unique collection of crystal glasses with silver rings around the stems. Engraved with the phrase amor vincit omnia (love conquers all), the collection is particularly suitable for engagement or wedding gifts. “I got an offer I couldn’t refuse,” explains Attling. “I was asked to design a crystal glass collection as Orrefors’ first external designer, which, of course, flattered me. I love challenges.” www.orrefors.com
