Embrace the holyday spirit by investing in a stylish new pair of shades Pretty much anything goes this season as long as they’re big bold and make a statement

words by Eva Johansson

Vintage-inspired looks are everywhere, spanning the ’50s to the ’80s and ranging from the classy and elegant to the downright quirky.

Ray-Bans are making a real comeback this year, and the Wayfarer is the style to sport, preferably in classic white or black. Originally worn by the likes of James Dean and Bob Dylan, these are set to be one of the summer’s big hits.

Beloved by the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Oliver Goldsmith is the label of choice for real fashionistas. The company has reintroduced styles from its 500-strong archive in every collection – check out Caisa (originally launched in 1972), a style that comes in a charming choice of coral pink, crystal berry, tuti fruiti and aqua – all of which look almost good enough to eat.

For a fresh take on old school, Adidas Original Eyewear’s FlyBoy offers just the right level of urban cool. These look fabulous with virtually any outfit and work as well in the city as on the beach.

Prada’s tortoiseshell numbers are the ultimate in retro-chic and channel that LA starlet style favoured by the likes of Nicole Richie.

Tag Heuer’s Roadster shades give a nod to retro specs without going too OTT. The discreet pattern gives them a unisex touch and sophistication that would work even with smarter outfits.

For luxury, check out Daniel Swarovski’s sunnies. Adorned with crystals, they’ll create a sparkle that’s unbeatable for making a glamorous impression.

Espa Exfoliating Body Polish
€26.05

It looks like frogspawn – tiny apricot kernels are suspended in dark, wobbly jelly – but smells like candy, a surprisingly satisfying combination. And once rubbed in and rinsed off, this aloe-based jelly delivers skin-brightening results that will make anyone look better in a swimsuit – especially if you’ve been hidden under your winter clothes so far this year. www.espaonline.com

Clinique Sparkle Skin
€27

This cooling, menthol body-buffer, in the brand’s signature pale green, will help to smooth your skin and prepare it for an even, lasting tan. It’s a processed paste rather than a natural-ingredient wonder gunk, with the advantage that it’s not messy to apply in the shower. The light, compact packaging also travels well. www.clinique.com

Origins Modern Friction for the Body
€42.50

If your body-baring worries include bumpy, dry or wrinkled skin (the curse of the sun worshipper), try this Origins scrub. Maybe it’s the corn extract, maybe it’s the purple Chinese rice, heck, maybe it’s the cupuacu butter, but a pot of Modern Friction will deliver smoother skin all over. www.origins.com

Alquimia Anti-cellulite Elixir and Shape Reducer Elixir
€45.70 each

If you’re scared to don a bathing suit, chances are it’s down to cellulite and excess fat. Alquimia is a Spanish company and lover of natural ingredients. These elixirs alone might not halve your weight or give you a butt like Madonna’s, but if you apply them regularly before your holiday (as well as hitting the gym) you should see some benefits and feel more beach-confident on arrival. www.alqvimia.com

Espa Fitness Body Oil
€43.50

After a hard day flaunting your body during those holiday volleyball matches, ease your tense muscles with this warming oil. It’s also a moisturiser, with natural ingredients including soothing eucalyptus (if anyone knows how to care for sun-parched skin, it’s the Aussies), that will have your bod looking its beach-ready best again by the morning. www.espaonline.com

Elemis Exotic Lime and Ginger Salt Glow
€57

This weighty, snap-top jar of salt crystals wouldn’t look out of place in a kitchen pantry. It looks heavy-duty but the essential oils within (including anti-ageing kukui) offer one of the gentlest ways to condition and nourish your skin. Some other kitchen-cupboard staples, lime and ginger, cleanse the skin and stimulate the metabolism. www.elemis.com
