MIPIM bigger than ever
Since its humble beginnings 19 years ago, MIPIM’s reputation as the world’s premier real estate summit for industry professionals has grown at a steady pace, from the number of exhibiting companies to the countries represented. Over the past two years, the number of participants has increased by a staggering 43% and a further 2,116m2 of exhibition space has been added by creating two new exhibition zones. Over 26,000 delegates from 83 countries attended the gathering in 2007, and MIPIM hopes to beat that record in 2008.
special topic: going green
Environmental awareness is increasingly becoming a top priority for the real estate industry. So for 2008, MIPIM has opted for an earth-friendly event, presenting a progressive ‘Green Initiatives’ list. Green-themed conferences will also take place on Wednesday 12 March, highlighting some of the industry’s most challenging issues. Keynote speaker Paul Dickinson, CEO of The Carbon Disclosure Projects, will present a special conference concerning the role of cities in managing greenhouse gas emissions (10am).
This will be followed by a discussion session titled ‘Going Green or Going Nuts’ at 11.30am, on how to improve the building industry’s sustainability while maintaining profits.
Other eco sessions will further explore environmental challenges in our cities. At 3pm, Håkan Bryngelson, President of Sweden’s carbon-neutral real estate company Vasakronan, and Yolande Barnes, Director of Research at Savills, the UK’s largest estate agent, will lead a discussion session. With Stockholm and London leading the way in ‘green’ real estate, they will discuss what our cities need to make them more attractive places to live, visit and invest in. At 4.30pm, the final conference of the day will be led by Jonathan Davis, Director of CABE (Commission for Architecture in the Built Environment) and will also include speaker Robin Nicholson, Senior Practice Director of Edward Cullinan Architects. Together they will discuss sustainable development.
and the winner is…
The prestigious MIPIM Awards Ceremony will be held on the last day of the summit, when an international jury of top real estate professionals will choose three nominees from each category. With the new ‘Green Buildings’ category for 2008, there is now a total of five categories, as well as an overall Special Jury award.
Over nearly two decades, MIPIM has accumulated a prestigious list of winners, representing countries from all over the world. In 2007, winners were from Spain, Belgium, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and Germany. The Special Jury award went to New York City for 7 World Trade Center.
Other recent winners include the Swedish entry in 2005 for the Turning Torso, in the Residential Developments category. The skyscraper officially opened in Malmö, Sweden, in August 2005 and was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
