the dark knight
Heath Ledger has cast a long shadow over one of the summer’s big blockbusters – Christopher Nolan’s keenly anticipated follow-up to Batman Begins. The gifted Australian actor’s role as The Joker , opposite Christian Bale’s caped crusader, was the last one he completed before his death from an overdose in January. Comparisons with Jack Nicholson’s 1989 Joker are off beam; Ledger’s portrayal has a more manic malevolence in keeping with Nolan’s grittier approach. Referring to the Joker, one character says: “Some men just want to see the world burn.” It looks like The Dark Knight will serve as Ledger’s pitch-black cinematic wake.
Directed by Christopher Nolan Released across Europe from 23 July
mamma mia in greece
Anyone looking for a feel-good antidote to The Dark Knight need look no further than Mamma Mia!. The big-screen version of the hit Abba musical comes complete with and all-star cast – led by Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan – and Bollywood-style outdoor choreography shot on location, with the islands of Skiathos and Skopelos doubling for the fictional Kalokairi. Key scenes were filmed on Skopelos’s beautiful Kastani beach and at a delightful cove near Amarantos. The Agnanti restaurant in Glossa, on the northern tip of Skopelos, was a favourite place for stars to chill out. But island-hoppers exploring Skopelos’s rocky interior should beware of its many wasps. Landlubbers will be relieved to hear you don’t have to board a boat to recreate the great Dancing Queen set-piece – it was shot at Damouhari harbour on the mainland.
Mamma Mia! will be released across Europe throughout July and August
noomi rapace
There’s something a bit Juliette Binoche about actress Noomi Rapace – that soulful-yet-resilient beauty, the kind that might have seen trouble.
And the 28-year-old Swede will need to draw on her inner strength to play punky computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in back-to-back movie adaptations of the late Stieg Larsson’s bestselling Millennium crime-and-corruption trilogy. Best known for her roles in Swedish TV series Labyrint and Simon Staho’s film, Daisy Diamond, Rapace is about to start shooting the first film, Men Who Hate Woman, which will be released next year.
