know your borders

In the past, those buying property and building plots in France have sometimes found it difficult to ascertain exactly how much land was included in the deal, and the exact location of legal borders. But now the French tax authorities have put land registry plans, known as cadastre, online. This is a very useful tool for property buyers from abroad, as the site is also available in English. hotspots where to invest in… crete

This issue, Erik Heyerdahl of The Leptos Group, picks the hotspots to watch

1. Chania – This is the classic place to buy property in Crete, the biggest of the Greek isles. With its beautiful harbour and narrow streets, Chania oozes charm. Ideally situated for both beach and town, with varied shopping and nightlife, it’s easy to see why so many Scandinavians love this place. Enduringly popular with good reason.

2. Rethymnon – Another very popular city, not far east of Chania airport. Like Chania, there’s the combination of beach and city life, and the town is well known for its tavernas serving great fresh fish.

3. Sitia – Unlike Chania and Heraklion, which are both on the north-west side of the island, Sitia is to the north-east. It’s a relatively new, up-coming area, so still has a lot of its original charm and not a lot of tourists yet. But with an airport being built here, it is tipped to become the next hotspot. Still relatively unspoilt, so get over there and buy while you can!
